Police responded to multiple calls reporting gunshots in the area of the Pickled Onion Bar on Rantoul Street on December 6, 2021, the Beverly Police Department said on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Police were directed by Beverly residents to locate and arrest 23-year-old Gordon Morrison who had been involved in the shooting. Morrison reported that he had been shot at during the incident, which had taken place on West Dane Street.

Security camera footage confirmed that Morrison had been shot at and that the suspects ran to the nearby Pickled Onion location.

The bar manager refused to fully cooperate, police said, and a search warrant had to be issued before police could get camera footage and customer credit card receipts to identify the suspects.

The information gleaned from the search warrant was enough to identify suspects, and police issued a second search warrant for the alleged shooter's home.

The search warrant resulted in the following arrests:

Christopher Sawyer, 39, of Stoneham, charged with:

  • Assault with a dangerous weapon
  • Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
  • Possession of a firearm while intoxicated
  • Obstruction of justice, hindering a police officer during an investigation
  • Conspiracy to obstruct justice
  • Withholding evidence in a criminal proceeding

Christopher Sturgis, 36, of Beverly, charged with:

  • Obstruction of justice, hindering a police officer during an investigation
  • Conspiracy to obstruct justice
  • Withholding evidence in a criminal proceeding

Sean Kelly, 28, of North Reading, charged with:

  • Obstruction of justice, hindering a police officer during an investigation

Morrison, who had been shot at during the incident, was charged with assault with an incendiary device.
